In retail, communication with your employees is extremely important. The employee’s experience in your store has a direct impact on your customer’s experience. When your communication is lacking, your store’s presentation can come across as unprofessional and amateurish. This can lead to your customer choosing somewhere else to shop. It can also lead to frustration on the employee’s end, leading to a never ending cycle of turnover. That said, there are things we can to correct this problem. Here are five ways to improve communication with your employees.

Pre-Shift Meetings: Having meetings before the shift begins can be a great way to plan out the work day. In this way, you’re able to clearly explain your expectations for the shift. It also gives your employees direct access to you on a regular basis. This gives them the opportunity to express any concerns they may have and clear up any misconceptions. Meetings like this can go a long way towards getting your work day off on the right foot.

Keep it Simple: Overwhelming your employees with information will only confuse and irritate them. A person can only retain so much at one time. For this reason, you want to keep your directions as simple and direct as possible. Your employees should have a very clear idea of what their responsibilities are. This way, they will be able to focus on the task at hand and not be bogged down with minor details.

Acknowledge Employee Accomplishments: One very effective way to keep your employees, and in turn your customers, happy is to acknowledge when they’re doing well. This can go a long way towards keeping employees satisfied, thereby decreasing turnover. It’s also a good way to let them know they’re on the right track. You might consider having an employee of the month or dedicating a wall in the breakroom to employee accomplishments. This is one of the best ways to make sure an employee who is doing well continues to exceed.

Use Digital Communication: New technology provides new opportunities to connect with our employees. This is especially important considering the pervasive nature of social media today. Using an retail communications app can be an amazing tool for keeping your employees informed. This is a simple way to make sure everyone receives your messages. Email and Facebook groups can also be effective. If your business is on the smaller side, you might consider setting the TV’s in your breakroom to broadcast important news and information.

Use Notice Boards: On the other hand, more traditional forms of communication can still be effective. Keeping a notice board in your breakroom can be a useful way to keep your employees informed on the latest going-ons in the store. However, keeping your board organized and up to date is still very important. Once again, you want to keep your message simple. Don’t overload your notice board with irrelevant information. Focus on the most important items that your employees need to know. This is the most efficient way to make sure your employees understand and retain your message.
